 GOODYEAR SPELLS RELIEF: ABC-TV/NFL
AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- For the first time in a quarter

century, the Goodyear blimp will pass up the chance to provide aerial television coverage of the season premiere ABC-TV Monday Night Football game. But viewers will still get a glimpse of the blimp -- and of its commander-in-chief.
Because it rerouted its blimp to Florida to help with disaster relief efforts, Goodyear (NYSE: GT) will use 30 seconds of commercial time for a message from its Chairman Stan Gault. Gault will explain to fans why the blimp is not at the game and encourage them to help hurricane victims by donating to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund via the fund's toll-free number, 800-842-2200.
"We thought this could be a great opportunity to give the Disaster Relief Fund another boost," said Barry Robbins, vice president of marketing. "We also thought the blimp's absence might seem unusual since its aerial shots are a traditional part of Monday Night Football, and we wanted to let the fans know why we're not there."
Robbins said the message, without the Monday Night Football reference, will be substituted for several other Goodyear commercials in the coming week.
"We pulled it together pretty quickly when the decision was made to reroute the blimp," he said. "The entire message was produced mostly in-house in 24 hours so we could meet the broadcast deadline." Goodyear worked with its advertising agency, J. Walter Thompson-Detroit, to create the message.
After urgent requests for the blimp's assistance from Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Andrew H. Card Jr. and the Red Cross, the airship Stars & Stripes, based in Pompano Beach, Fla., was diverted to Florida Monday evening while traveling to cover the Redskins-Cowboys match in Dallas.
After nearly doubling its usual daily travel time to 15 hours to get there, the airship is expected to begin operating its electronic night sign Friday evening (Sept. 4) to direct hurricane victims to food, housing and medical facilities.
Gault is chairman of the Northern Ohio Division of the Red Cross disaster relief campaign and has been working since June to raise money to replenish the fund, which has been depleted by the unusually high number of recent disasters.
