GOODYEAR BLIMP LIGHTS UP DETROIT

 GOODYEAR BLIMP LIGHTS UP DETROIT
DETROIT, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- One sign of the economic times was

brought to light today as Goodyear officials threw the switch on the first of two neon-lit, blimp-shaped signs that will track North American motor vehicle production.
Bruce Brown, Goodyear's Detroit-based vice president of original equipment sales, gave the signal to Goodyear's real airship, Stars and Stripes, to resume the motor vehicle count on the 95-foot "Spirit of Detroit" landblimp at the interchange of I-94 & I-75.
The signs have a history with the city that date back more than 40 years when the first of three locations was adorned with a diamond- shaped Goodyear logo equipped with a counter that looked like the odometer of an automobile.
"We look at this involvement as symbolic of our commitment to the city of Detroit, and what it stands for in the automotive industry," Brown said.
When the lease came due on the old signs last year, a decision had to be made on whether or not to continue the tradition, Brown said.
"We wanted it to continue, but with a new look and a new emphasis," he added. "It was only natural that we utilize the symbol synonymous with this company, the Goodyear blimp."
In concert with Chairman Stan Gault's new color scheme for the traditional icons, Goodyear worked with Detroit's Gannett Outdoor Sign Co., and Townsend Neon, Inc. to develop the landblimps complete with graphic display message boards visible night and day.
The sign at I-94 & I-75 is the first to be completed. Work is progressing at another location, on I-94 and Monroe, where two separate ships facing both directions will greet motorists entering and leaving the city.
According to John Townsend of Townsend Neon, a giant crane will be lifting the completed I-94 and Monroe sign into place within about a week.
