GOODYEAR'S AQUATRED TAKES ON MONSOONS OF ASIA

AKRON, Ohio, Nov. 18 ~PRNewswire~ -- After making a big splash in the United States, Goodyear's (NYSE: GY) radical Aquatred wet-traction tire soon will be battling the monsoons of Asia.
Shipments of the Aquatred, with its water-pumping center groove, to the Far East -- including Japan -- have begun, according to Howard Steele, Goodyear's manager of sales and marketing for Asia. The tires are made in Union City, Tenn.
"We think it will be a big seller in the region," Steele said, "because it disperses water so efficiently. Except for Japan and Korea, Asian motorists obviously don't need the tire's snow traction capabilities, but its deep aquachannel groove certainly will be well- appreciated in their heavy monsoon rains."
To handle those conditions, Goodyear engineers at the company's technical center in Luxembourg have enhanced Aquatred's already impressive rain performance -- "a good example of thinking global, and acting local," Steele said.
Five 70-series sizes are being exported to Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Taiwan and South Korea. Tires are containerized in Union City for ocean shipment to Asia. Some Japanese tire dealers already have imported Aquatreds via contacts with United States dealers.
Exporting the tires from North America is phase one of Goodyear's Asian Aquatred strategy. Aquatred production "in sizable quantities" will begin in Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand in the second quarter of 1993, Steele said.
"This will be the first time we've rationalized production for the region," he said. The tire will be sold primarily by independent Goodyear dealers.
And what does the name Aquatred mean in an Asian language? "Fortunately, Aquatred doesn't have a strange meaning in any of the region's languages," Steele said. "It can be sold under its American birth name."
The Aquatred tire, of which nearly 1 million already have been made since its debut a year ago in the U.S., also is being exported to Canada and Mexico. It will be produced and introduced in Europe next year.
