Fifth-grade students from the Lancaster School District were asked to write an essay of 25 words or less, describing what the Lancaster Christmas/Holiday Parade theme ``Tidings of Joy'' meant to them. They were then instructed to create a picture reflecting that meaning. First-place winner was Tatiana Wesley from El Dorado El Dorado, legendary country of South America El Dorado (ĕl`dərä`dō, –rā`–) [Span.,=the gilded man], legendary country of the Golden Man sought by adventurers in South America. Elementary, who wrote, ``Means, good news! News, like happiness; through giving and sharing. We should always give joy rather than receive it. Joy also brings peace and smiles.'' For the idea behind her winning entry, Wesley said, ``You just have to go with your heart.'' Wesley, dressed in a red and green dress, said she was confident she would win her first-ever entry into a contest but admitted to being a little nervous. Wesley will be the ``Princess of Hospitality'' at the 11th Annual Hospitality Walk on Dec. 1 along Lancaster Boulevard and the ``Junior Grand Marshall'' of the Dec. 2 Holiday Parade. Tatiana and runners-up Jordon Hood and Joshua Smedley will ride on Santa's float in the parade. News of the win reached Wesley's mother in a rather roundabout way. Rhonda Claybon was at work and couldn't be reached by the school, so the school principal, Melinda Keenan, called every number on Wesley's emergency card to reach Claybon. ``I was surprised,'' said Claybon, who encouraged her daughter to enter. ``She brought the form home. I said, why don't you give it your best shot, try it.'' ``It was an honor and a blessing,'' said Claybon. ``I'm very proud of her.'' Claybon added that it was a blessing just to be at the press conference. The family had been involved in a car crash the previous night and their car was demolished. Second-place winner was Jordon Hood from Jack Northrop Elementary School elementary school: see school. , and third-place winner was Joshua Smedley from Lincoln Elementary School Lincoln Elementary School is the name of numerous schools, with most of them in the U.S. named after President Abraham Lincoln, including:
The idea to get youngsters involved came from Mike Pope, president of the Lancaster Old Town Site. ``I just think this was a natural,'' said Pope. ``We're always looking for Looking for In the context of general equities, this describing a buy interest in which a dealer is asked to offer stock, often involving a capital commitment. Pope said he believes the theme contest will be a continuing tradition for Lancaster. ``It's been very successful and I can't imagine them not doing it.'' Also encouraging the idea was Steve Gocke, superintendent for the Lancaster School District. ``We started with one idea and kind of evolved into this,'' said Gocke, a former fifth-grade teacher. Gocke said he chose the fifth grade to participate because ``Fifth-graders are industrious and thoughtful and can write meaningful things.''
