- N.H. SLOW COOKER HELPER: Slow cooker meals don't tend to be very difficult to toss in the pot, especially if you plan a bit ahead. Even so, Betty Crocker has introduced New Slow Cooker Helper in four varieties - Pot Roast, Beef Stew, Chicken & Dumplings and Beef Stroganoff. The new dinner kits (each package contains a simmer seasoning packet and vegetables, potatoes, pasta or a dumpling topping) require five minutes of preparation time in the morning to add water and beef or chicken (you supply the meat; it's not in the package) to the slow cooker to end up with a hearty, home-cooked meal in the evening. The dumplings require a little extra cooking time - 20 minutes - before serving but go together effortlessly. Each 8- to 10-ounce box makes seven servings and has a suggested retail price of $3.99. One last thought: Since the beef or chicken isn't included in these kits, you might be better off mixing up your own combos (there are loads of slow cooker cookbooks on the market these days).
