GOOD TASTES.

MOM'S BEST FOR A CROWD

If you're always searching for familiar, standby recipes that your mother used to make -- or you have a bunch of old-time recipes on bits and pieces of paper and you can never locate them when you need them -- you're bound to find a copy of ``Mom's Best Crowd-Pleasers'' by Andrea Chesman (Storey Publishing; $10.95) useful.

Granted, it's not upscale or chic fare (at least most of it) but I had fun perusing the 101 fuss-free, easy recipes -- for favorites like Hot Artichoke artichoke, name for two different plants of the family Asteraceae (aster family), both having edible parts. The French, or globe, artichoke (Cynara scolymus  Dip, Hot Crab Dip, Baked Brie, Lemonade, Sun Tea, Baked French Toast, Cheese Blintzes, Tabbouleh tab·bou·leh or ta·bou·leh

These are homey, hearty creations with modern, updated twists -- and they're simple and accessible to any cook. Now you won't have to worry if you're in a hurry and you can't find your mom's best recipe. It just may be in this volume -- or at least something similar.

SNACK ON PISTACHIOS

Everybody's Nuts! just released four flavors of California-grown pistachios -- Salt & Pepper, Roasted No Salt, Roasted & Salted, and European Roast. Available in 7-ounce boxes, each containing 3 1/2 (170-calorie) servings, the nuts are large and unshelled un·shell
tr.v. un·shelled, un·shell·ing, un·shells
To remove from a shell.

Adj. 1. unshelled - of animals or fruits that have no shell

shelled - of animals or fruits that have a shell
(but partially opened). The good thing is, you can't eat them very quickly as it takes time to shell them as you go. If you find a closed shell in the package, send it to the company along with a proof of purchase and they'll send you a free box. With the box featuring a cartoon character called Stach, it appears the company is hoping to appeal to children. But we're not so sure about that premise, as some of the shells are difficult to open and only older children could even attempt to pry them open. Suggested retail is $3.99 per box. Pick the nuts up in the produce department of Albertsons, Vons, Bristol Farms and Wal-Mart stores.

We liked the no-salt and salt-and-pepper flavors best. The roasted & salted and the European roast were a little heavy-handed in the salt department.
