Red Hawk is a washed rind triple cream cheese made from Straus Dairy organic cow's milk. Smooth, creamy and pungent, it's best enjoyed at room temperature (leave out an hour before serving to soften). You can find it locally at the Cheese Store of Silver Lake, (323) 644-7511. It's pricey (around $16 to $18 per pound or more) but wonderful and worth splurging on.

The contest attracted 615 American-made cheeses this year - and it took 22 judges two days of tasting to come up with the winners in the various categories like Cheddars, Soft Ripened Cheese, American Originals, Italian Type Cheese, Blue Mold Cheese, etc. For a complete list of winners, go to www.cheesesociety.org.

If you're headed to San Francisco, visit the new Cowgirl Creamery Artisan Cheese shop in the San Francisco Ferry Building at 1 Ferry Plaza, along the Embarcadero. You'll find a selection of artisan cheeses from around the world.

Mt. Tam is another terrific Cowgirl Creamery cheese worth trying. A triple cream, mold-ripened cheese, also made from Straus organic cow's milk, it's buttery rich with a mellow earthy mushroom flavor (it's not as pungent as the Red Hawk).

NEW: McConnell's Fine Ice Creams of Santa Barbara recently introduced California Lemon Zest, which joins 22 other flavors available to consumers in pints. It got mixed reviews. Some tasters liked this new addition, while others would have preferred a more pronounced lemon flavor. But it was definitely rich. If you're a citrus fan, give it a try. Look for it at Gelson's, Bristol Farms and some Ralphs, Whole Foods and Pavilions. Suggested retail price is about $3.79 per pint.
