Care and Share, a local food pantry, expects to deliver 500 turkeys donated by Throop Real Estate to families across Simi Valley on Monday. The families are regular participants in the program and have already signed up for the distribution, said director Veronica Rubio, who said the group serves about 6,000 families per year. This is the 30th year Care and Share has provided Thanksgiving meals and every year, she said, the number of needy families grows larger. Apollo Continuation High students plan to hold a luncheon Wednesday for students and community members who have supported the school in the past year. This year, the school collected 20 donated turkeys to feed an estimated 350 to 400 people. ``For some of our kids, it's the only Thanksgiving they get,'' said Eddie Zager, a substance-abuse counselor on campus who oversees the meal. ``A lot of our kids, they don't always get it at home. We wanted it to be something for them - something special.'' The students also donate food to the Samaritan Center, Simi Valley's drop-in center for the homeless. ``This is also a way that I bond with a lot of students who help me out,'' Zager said. ``Being a substance-abuse counselor is about building relationships and just trying to do nice things for the kids.'' Virginia Nelson, the new director of the Samaritan Center, said the volunteers find the experience of helping out on the holidays very rewarding. ``Helping people at these meals has always been very heartfelt,'' Nelson said. ``It always makes Thanksgiving more rewarding, when you know that you are helping others.'' Nelson said she started volunteering at the Samaritan Center 10 years ago after a friend asked her if she wanted to help feed the homeless at Thanksgiving. ``I thought I was going to Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , and when I found out I was going to feed the homeless here Simi Valley, it really threw me.'' Holiday food drives have a new twist this year with an online Virtual Food Drive undertaken by FoodShare Inc. The nonprofit, volunteer agency provides food to churches, the Samaritan Center, the Simi Valley Senior Center and other agencies throughout Ventura County. The Virtual Food Drive, which can be reached at www.foodshare.com, uses a new Internet See Web 2.0 and Internet2. program to gather donations more efficiently, saving money so more food can be provided to the needy. ``The virtual food drive went up on our Web site this month, and we are just beginning to get results. It's a way to get food out quickly,'' said Susie Burmeister, food drive coordinator for FoodShare. ``It tells (donors) what we need at the time, what the wholesale price is, and it allows them to click on the item and put it in their shopping cart.'' The donor then pays for the selections online. FoodShare volunteers also continue collecting food in traditional, low- tech ways, including going into the agricultural fields of Ventura County to pick fruits and vegetables themselves. The agency obtains surplus food from grocery stores and from barrels set up this week at Vons grocery stores throughout the county. Burmeister said FoodShare depends on about 700 volunteers, serves about 45,000 people a month and distributes up to 10 million pounds of food worth between $15 million and $16 million a year. ``We're getting bigger, unfortunately,'' she said. ``The cost of living has become so outrageous here, medical expenses and housing.
