The home of Scott and Martha Kinslow is the most frequent setting during warm weather, and they love playing the hosts.

``We have outdoor things in front of our house most of the time,'' Martha said, ``because we face east and the sun is behind us in the late afternoons. Obviously everybody is more comfortable sitting in the shade here in the desert.''

Some 45 people showed up for a potluck barbecue.

The garage was emptied of vehicles, and long tables were set up in a U shape to hold the food, stacks of picnic plates and utensils, condiments and buns for hamburgers and hot dogs.

``Most of all, they're really good friends and neighbors,'' said Rosoff. ``Whenever any of us need help, they're right there for us.''
