GOOD NEIGHBOR GETTY; CENTER WILL PICK UP TRAFFIC TAB.

After complaints from Getty Center Getty Center, art museum complex in Brentwood, Calif. operated by the J. Paul Getty Trust. It consists of six buildings on 124 acres (50 hectares) located on a spectacular promontory overlooking Los Angeles.  neighbors whose streets are overrun 1. overrun - A frequent consequence of data arriving faster than it can be consumed, especially in serial line communications. Under the agreement, the city Department of Transportation will assign two parking officers to direct traffic and enforce parking time limits near the museum during peak hours peak hours npl, peak period

, and the Getty Center will reimburse the department's overtime account for those costs, up to $50,000 a year.

The council's approval of the agreement was required to enable the department to deposit the payments in its overtime account.

The agreement also will allow the Getty Center to reimburse the department for the costs of installing signs and painting new lane stripes, if necessary, to ease the flow of traffic.

``If they were to request additional signage, we could do that in a day or two. So it allows us to be extremely flexible and responsive to the community, while still recovering our cost,'' Roseman said.

The center has not yet added new signs or street lanes, but has been relying on city parking officers since March 30 - during the spring break period between March 30 and April 11, and on weekends, Roseman said. And it will likely rely heavily on the officers during the summer tourism season.

``During the peak visitor period, what the Getty Center has requested of us is to provide traffic direction so that people get in and out without disrupting traffic in the area,'' Roseman said.

``On weekends, they ask that we do traffic enforcement so that no one is violating the time-limited parking. These are services that are beneficial, but are somewhat costly to us and we don't want to use regular public dollars for those.''

The city estimates it will cost the Getty Center $50,000 to cover overtime costs of assigning as·sign

Roseman said he did not immediately have information on the rate of traffic through the Getty Center area or on how much the museum's presence has increased it.
