AR Rahman weaves his magic once again in new film Yuvvraaj. The songs truly stand out with a mix of Indian and western classical sounds, the grand sets, the stunning scenery of Austria and Prague, and great choreography. From Tu Meri Dost Hai, in the beginning to the final concert, full of drama and emotion, the numbers are enthralling en·thrall tr.v. en·thralled, en·thrall·ing, en·thralls 1. To hold spellbound; captivate: The magic show enthralled the audience. 2. To enslave. . But, barring a few scenes in the second half, the greatness of the movie ends here. In the first hour the storytelling is weak and sluggish, and the majority of the scenes are unnecessary. The film doesn't really start until after the interval. It's about Deven Yuvvraaj (Salman Khan), a struggling singer who is estranged es·trange tr.v. es·tranged, es·trang·ing, es·trang·es 1. To make hostile, unsympathetic, or indifferent; alienate. 2. She grew up in Hawaii and then moved to London. ) and in order to marry her promises her dad he will become a billionaire within 40 days. Deven's own wealthy father dies, leaving all his money to his mentally-ill eldest son Gyanesh (Anil Kapoor). Deven and his wayward younger brother Danny (Zayed Khan Zayed Khan (Hindi: ज़ैईद ख़ान, Pashto: زيد خان), born April 27 1980, India, is an Indian Bollywood actor. ) want a slice of the fortune and play games to get their hands on it. The family-versus-money tale only makes a connection with the viewers in the second half. It starts getting interesting when Danny heartlessly hits his ill brother and later when the musicloving Gyanesh sings in public for the first time. Anil is outstanding in his role. His expressions and emotions, particularly in the final song, are something to watch out for. Salman and Zayed too do a good job but they only shine when the story picks up towards the end. The last 20 minutes bring out the best in Salman. Katrina looks angelic but is still not up to the mark when it comes to dialogues and expressions. With top director Subhash Ghai at the helm, this should have been a better film. He has always been good at certain things, like mixing soultouching music and majestic settings with drama. We saw similar in several of his previous ventures like Taal and Pardes. But the script has failed him this time. Yuvvraaj would have been unmissable if he had tightened the story.
