GOOD ENOUGH TO BEAT ECR; MONROE'S ENNIS DOWNPLAYS WIN : MONROE 7, EL CAMINO REAL 2.

Byline: Chris Branam Daily News Staff Writer

He wasn't throwing darts and his control wasn't that sharp. But by the sixth inning, John Ennis was able to kick his legs up in his dugout with the knowledge that he did what he needed to do to win.

Ennis, Monroe High's senior right-hander, gave up two hits in five innings and the Vikings beat defending City Section 4-A champion and host El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

``It felt like a first game,'' Ennis said, referring to the early season opener for both teams. ``Your body feels good, but going out there and facing batters is another thing.''

Ennis, who was 7-4 with a 2.50 ERA last year, pitched with about 20 scouts behind home plate. He is expected to be an early-round pick in the Major League Baseball "MLB" and "Major Leagues" redirect here. For other uses, see MLB (disambiguation) and Major Leagues (disambiguation).

Again, he said he's not pitching for the scouts. Ennis has already signed a letter of intent to play at UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

It's wasn't a great way to start for El Camino Real. The Conquistadores committed three errors, causing at least one run scored each time.

``When we make errors like that,'' ECR coach Mike Maio said, ``then that's my fault to see that it doesn't happen.''

Johnny Koegel, a junior right-hander who turned 16 on Tuesday, wasn't helped by shaky defense in the first. A run scored when Woody Cliffords fielded Ennis' grounder and then collided with Ennis in a tag attempt.

The ball rolled into right field and Victor Hall scored. That play typified how most of the rest of the game went for the Conquistadores, who are known for their slow starts.

``It's definitely not the end of the world,'' Maio said.

But with one out, a run in and Jackson on third, Madrid retired the next three batters to get out of the jam.

``With (Madrid) lobbing it in there and John gunning it, it was a nice contrast,'' Monroe coach Fred Pudrith said.
