GONZALEZ TO BE FETED AT FAIR.

The events of a year ago will be on everybody's minds when the Los Angeles County Fair The Los Angeles County Fair (also called simply the L.A. County Fair) is an annual event held in the Fairplex in Pomona, California, held every September. It is a carnival with rides, merchants, food vendors, cooking contests, and livestock. The 2007 L.A.  season begins with 13 races this afternoon at Fairplex Park in Pomona.

Leading-rider contenders at the 18-day meet will be competing for the J.C. Gonzalez Memorial Jockey Award, established after Gonzalez was killed in a racetrack accident on opening day in 1999. Gonzalez's memory will also be honored Saturday when his family joins current and retired jockeys - including Bill Shoemaker William Lee Shoemaker (August 19, 1931 – October 12, 2003) was an American jockey.

 and Johnny Longden John Eric Longden (February 14, 1907 - February 14, 2003) was an American Hall of Fame jockey. He was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England but his father wanted to build a better life for his family so in 1909 emigrated to Canada, settling in Taber, Alberta. Gonzalez, the 1998 Fairplex riding champion, was 23 when he died of head injuries Sept. 9, 1999, after his mount in the fifth race broke down and fell, throwing the jockey in the path of trailing horses.

First post is set for noon all 18 consecutive days of the fair. Racetrack admission is free with a $10 fair general admission ticket.

The opening-day card begins with two appaloosa races. The thoroughbred races include a pair of $50,000 stakes. Matt Garcia rides favorites Grey Memo in the 6 1/2-furlong Foothill Stakes for 3-year-olds and Sea Reel in the 6 1/2-furlong Bustles and Bows for 2-year-old fillies.

Martin Pedroza has 10 scheduled mounts today as he opens defense of his 1999 riding championship.
