The 18-year-old Upton, who signed a record-setting $6.2 million minor-league contract with Arizona in January, is the younger brother of 2002 No. 2 overall pick B.J. Upton.

Justin Upton, who was drafted as a shortstop but could also play center field, will start the season in South Bend. He could see a promotion to Lancaster or beyond if it becomes apparent that he is not challenged in the low-A Midwest League.

``If he dominates that league, it's something we'll consider, but an argument can be made for keeping him in South Bend,'' Hinch said. ``He still hasn't played a game at the professional level yet.''

Hinch said other top prospects projected to start the season in Lancaster include second baseman Emilio Bonificio, who is ranked No. 27 among Arizona's top prospects by Baseball America.

--Hall of Fame: Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jack Wilson and community leader Larry Lake were inducted into the now 17-member JetHawks Hall of Fame.

Wilson played for the Lancaster Stealth in the 1999 California Fall League.

Lake, who died in 1997, is a former Lancaster Chamber of Commerce director who founded the Lancaster West Rotary All-Star game for top area high school players. The game has since been named in his honor.
