SVEN GORAN ERIKSSON was axed as Mexico manager last night - and is on course for a return to the Premier League.

The former England boss was reeling from a 3- 1 World Cup qualifying loss to Honduras on Wednesday when the Mexican Football Federation fired him.

But his agent, Athole Still, immediate ly s t a r ted considering his next move. He said: "He will have plenty of offers for work, there is no doubt about that.

"He would love to work in England again. I would say his first choice would be a good Premier League club in England where he has a challenge."

The 61-year-old Swede, who left the England job after the 2006 World Cup, took over at Manchester City in summer 2007 but lasted just one season.

He signed a two-year, pounds 5million contract with Mexico last summer but his latest defeat left them in fourth place in the North and Central American group, outside the automatic places for South Africa 2010.

"We could not take risks with qualification for the World Cup, " said Mexican Football Federation president Justino Compean.

While results hurt him, E r i ksson al so s t i r red controversy in a country fiercely loyal to its national team by adding four naturalised citizens to the squad.
