``This recall is an abuse of the laws that were established to protect taxpayers against fraud and corruption,'' says Gomez's formal response to the recall, which he filed with the City Clerk's Office.

cost taxpayers money and undermines the integrity of our local elections,'' wrote Gomez, who could not be reached for comment.

A special recall election would cost taxpayers an estimated $160,000.

Gomez's response also touts his patriotism and law enforcement experience as a deputy attorney general in the California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  Department of Justice and as a deputy district attorney.

``Our mayor, Gus Gomez, is a proud American who has dedicated his life to public service to protect the principles upon which our nation was founded,'' Gomez wrote, referring to himself in third person.

Gomez ended his statement by noting that he is supported by the Glendale Firefighters Association, the Glendale Police Officers Association and local veterans.

Joe Mandoky, the leader of the recall campaign, disputes that Gomez has support from local veterans. At least one veterans group, American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  Post 127, has spoken out against Gomez's decision to lower the flag.

Mandoky said he is disappointed the mayor did not address the issue of lowering the flag in his statement.

``(The recall) has nothing to do with Mr. Gomez personally. It has everything to do with him not obeying the (U.S.) Flag Code,'' Mandoky said.

Responding to accusations that he was trying to recall Gomez so he could run to replace him, Mandoky, a former council candidate, said he has changed his mind and would not run for Gomez's seat if the recall is successful.

``I don't want to get elected because I am the one who kicked Gus Gomez out,'' he said.
