GOLFERS TEE UP TO FUND ARTS.Byline: Cecilia Chan Staff Writer Players competed on the greens Monday to raise money for the arts. The third annual 1999 Alliance Shoot-out for the Arts Golf Tournament attracted 116 players to the Sherwood Country Club's 18-hole golf course, each paying $1,000 to play on the Jack Nicklaus-designed greens. ``This is the biggest fund-raiser of the year,'' said Patricia Moore, executive director of the Alliance for the Arts. ``It's going to help support children's programming as well as general fine arts programming. It's going to help support performance that goes on in the Civic Arts Plaza.'' The nonprofit Alliance for the Arts is the fund-raising arm of the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza is a performing arts and administrative center located in Thousand Oaks, California. Earlier this year, the Alliance reached a milestone, raising $15 million in pledges. This year's honorary golf tournament chairman and -woman were Charles E. Young Dr. Charles E. Moore said the event, which included a silent and live auction, drew 40 corporate sponsors from the greater Conejo Valley The Conejo Valley is a region spanning both Southeastern Ventura County and Northwest Los Angeles County in Southern California, United States. It was discovered in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, and eventually became part of the Rancho El Conejo land grant by area. Last year's tournament netted $86,000 that was distributed to 26 youth programming and performing arts organizations. ``We are just very, very grateful for the support,'' Moore said. ``We can't thank people enough for digging deep into their pockets to help us. They are supporting the cultural enrichment in this community.'' And ``it's a way, I think, of them giving back because of what the performance arts center has done for their community.'' The plaza attracts an average of 277,000 people a year who attend performances in music, dance, literature and art, and of that number 86 percent would not have driven to Thousand Oaks had it not been for the theater, according to a Pepperdine University study done last year. The study also showed average yearly donations to the Alliance of the Arts are about $2.8 million, and the theater has a total economic annual impact of between $19.6 million and $21.8 million to the community. The Alliance asked for the study to determine the benefits of the Civic Arts Plaza, which opened its doors in 1994 to controversy due largely to its $64 million price tag. The plaza also houses City Hall. |
