Canyons and the rest of the conference teams are playing the SCGA course to take advantage of the WSC's neutral-site week for the sixth WSC tournament.

Phil Martinez, who in his senior year helped Granada Hills High win the eighth of its nine City Section titles, led Canyons' conference sweep Monday on the Cougars' home course, TPC (Transaction Processing Performance Council, San Francisco, CA, www.tpc.org) An organization devoted to benchmarking transaction processing systems. In order to derive the number of transactions that can be processed in a given time frame, TPC benchmarks measure the total performance of  Valencia.

Martinez shot 72 for tournament medalist honors, followed by Riley Marshall (74), Kyle Marshall (76), Joe Greiner (77) and Damian Yi (77), as Canyons totaled 376 to hold off runner-up Moorpark by four strokes.

Canyons entered the competition at TPC Valencia tied with Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  for the conference lead and finished the day with a three-win lead as Santa Barbara (23-7) placed fourth at 390, behind a 383 compiled by Hancock of Santa Maria Santa Maria, city, Brazil

Ventura (399), Bakersfield (400) and Citrus (401) completed the team scoring.

Martinez was the second tournament medalist in three weeks for the Cougars, following Edgar Reyes, who led Canyons to the title in the Citrus Invitational at Glendora Country Club - the third invitational championship of the year for Peterson's team.

"I think we're down to eight golfers," Peterson said. "On any given day, any one of them can be low. It's good, because they're all beating each other up."

The Cougars have plenty of experience, as only Reyes and Greiner are freshmen, and Peterson is guardedly optimistic about another strong postseason by his program, which has produced three state champions.

"I think we'll be OK," he said, "but Santa Barbara is good, and Moorpark (in third place at 16-14) is coming on, so we'll see what happens."

Moorpark is host school for the conference finals, scheduled for April 24 at Lost Canyons Golf Club in Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .
