GOLF TEAM ON VERGE OF JOINING ROYAL ROYALTY YOUNG SQUAD IS 'GOING TO BE SOMETHING'.Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer It's a school that has been recognized mostly for its powerhouse water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. But the young and talented Royal High golf team could alter that perception, if not this year, then certainly next. ``They are really going to be something,'' said Valencia coach Rusty Swisher swisher Sexology A regional term for a really queer queer, not that there's anything wrong with that , the 2001 Daily News boys' golf coach of the year and a big fan of youthful Royal, which could start five underclassmen against Swisher's 7-1 Vikings on Monday at Valencia Country Club. ``I'd like to believe we're going to be better by the end of the season,'' Royal coach Bob Misko said of his Highlanders, who have opened 3-3 overall and 2-3 in Marmonte League The Marmonte League is a high school sports league primarily made up of schools from Ventura County. A starting lineup in sports refers to the set of players actively participating in the event when the game begins. The players in the starting lineup are commonly referred to as starters, whereas the others are substitutes that could include as many as three freshmen against Valencia. Returning two-year starter Danny Hoffenberg, who plays to a 3 handicap on his home course of Wood Ranch, leads Royal after serving as captain in his sophomore season last year, when he qualified for postseason individual play. Alex Ferrari, one of just two seniors on the team, presses Hoffenberg for team scoring honors - both averaging in the low 70s. Matt Hoffenberg, Danny's brother - also a 3-handicapper at Wood Ranch and a former Ventura Country junior golfer of the year - plays No. 3 as a freshman. Sophomore Tyler De Groot, at No. 4, shot a 79 in windy conditions at Moorpark Country Club. Paul Misko, son of the coach, plays No. 5 as a freshman and has a best of 72 at par-67 Westlake Village. And freshman Joey Buttitta, son of Westlake Village teaching pro Joe Buttitta, is contending with sophomore Bryan Austria and senior Daniel Brown for the sixth and final starting spot. Buttitta has been hampered by a hand injury and limited to just two rounds, but one of them was a 3-over-par 70 in an important league win over Moorpark. Royal has had its moments in the golf spotlight - as recently as the 1998 and '99 seasons, when eventual UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles UCLA University Center for Learning Assistance (Illinois State University) UCLA University of Carrollton, TX and Lower Addison, TX record-setter and Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, Golf Association champion Roy Moon was blasting his way to back- to-back individual league championships. Five years earlier, long-hitting Anthony Marciano reigned as Marmonte champion. Before that, well before any of this year's youthful Highlanders were born, Palika Gallagher won Royal's first individual title. But mostly, golf in the Marmonte League - for Royal and six of the other seven teams - has been a long litany of chasing powerhouse Westlake, which has won 12 consecutive team titles and 15 individual titles since Gallagher won for Royal 24 years ago. Misko is optimistic about this Royal team but suspects it might be a year away from a serious title challenge, given the tremendous early showing of Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964.
