Hart of Newhall outlasted them and the elements Tuesday to win the first Foothill League boys golf tournament of the season.

Led by Brendan Dean and Adam Leary - both at 1-under-par 34 - No. 1-ranked Hart (19-4) finished with a first-place total of 185 in the scheduled 18-hole competition, which was reduced to nine holes by heavy rain at De Bell Golf Course in Burbank.

Unranked Burroughs (9-3) took second at 188, No. 7 Saugus (11-4) was third at 195 and No. 3 Valencia (7-7) was fourth at 202 in the first of five league tournaments that will determine the three Foothill teams that qualify for the Southern Section playoffs.

Casey Ceman of Valencia and Con O'Connor of Burbank shared medalist honors at 34 with Hart's Leary and Dean. Freshman Chase Dontanville shot 35 to lead Burroughs, the only team to have five scores in the 30s.

``I knew Burroughs would be tough because it's their home course and they've shot some pretty good scores there,'' Hart coach Aaron Fuller said of the short, but tight, and hilly De Bell, which plays to a maximum of 5,353 yards and a par of 71 for 18 holes.

``I told our kids they needed to defend their home turf,'' Burroughs coach Mike Krose said. ``We've been playing well.''

Foothill League play resumes with an April 12 tournament at Robinson Ranch, followed by tournaments at Griffith Park Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains. It is situated in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.
