--How 'bout those 'Dogs? This was supposed to be a building year for Highland of Palmdale, which won three consecutive Golden League titles from 1998-2000 and missed a fourth in a final-match loss last season.

But coach Lyndon Boop's Bulldogs, with no seniors among their top six scorers, have started 21-1 and are coming off a school-record score of 372 in Thursday's third league match at par-72, 6,908-yard Tierra del Sol in California City.

Junior Pat Londano was medalist at 68, offsetting a bogey and double bogey Verb 1. double bogey - to shoot two strokes over par

with five birdies and an eagle. Sophomores Eugene Park (72) and Ryan Kahl (78), junior Brandon Olsson (75) and freshman Chris Mendoza (78) completed the scoring for the Bulldogs, and freshman Erik Jarvey added a nonscoring 80, good for eighth place overall, in the six-team competition.

That 16-over-par team total was barely best of the year for coach Dave Costley's Warriors. They shot 373 at par-71 La Cumbre La Cumbre (Spanish: "the peak") is the name of several places.

, which looks even stronger this year.

--Rising program: Roy Hudson could do no better than 3-13 last season, his first as coach at Chaminade of West Hills, which placed sixth in the seven-team Mission League.

But this year's Eagles are 7-1 in nonleague play and have recorded what is believed to be the school's first-ever victory over longtime league power Loyola of Los Angeles. It came in a nonleague meeting between the two teams that could fight it out with St. Francis of La Canada Flintridge and Harvard-Westlake of Studio City for this year's Mission League title.

Senior Garrett Sullivan has been the steadiest on what Hudson calls a talented but inconsistent team that includes 12 players capable of shooting nine-hole scores in the 30s. Which six start each week depends on which six score best in Hudson's weekly regrouping tournaments.

Seniors Mike Zerah and Oliver Lewis and juniors Eric Moosa and Neil Tobak regularly shoot nine- hole rounds in the 30s, and sophomore Vanessa Brockett shot 2 under at par-36 Encino during a 7-0 start by the Vikings.
