GOLF NOTEBOOK: HIGH DESERT IN PLAYOFFS 5 DEEP.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer

Alpha League champion Mike Sinclair of Paraclete and Golden League champion Erik Jarvey of Highland lead a contingent of five High Desert high school golfers into the first round of Southern Section individual postseason play Monday.

Travis Ulberg of Highland, C.J. Ancheta of Antelope Valley and Nate Ancheta of Quartz Hill also have qualified for Monday's Northern Regional at River Ridge Golf Course in Oxnard, where the top 24 players advance to the May 23 section individual championship.

The section championship, which will be held at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs, will advance 28 golfers to the June 2 CIF/SCGA (Southern California) championship, the final qualifier for the June 8 state championship at Poppy Hills GC in Pebble Beach. High school golfers from the Southern, San Diego, Central and Los Angeles sections of the California Interscholastic Federation compete in the CIF/SCGA championship, with the top six individual players moving on to state.

The four-step postseason process likely will start in wind, which is a constant late-morning and afternoon presence at River Ridge and could be an asset to High Desert entries, who play regularly in windy conditions.

The Golden League played most of its league matches in wind this season, concluding in wind and rain last week at Tierra Del Sol in California City, where Jarvey, Ulberg, C.J. Ancheta and Nate Ancheta secured postseason berths by finishing with the top four league averages, in that order.

Paraclete's Sinclair, who averaged near par most of the season, earned his postseason berth by winning the 36-hole Alpha League tournament at Elkins Ranch GC in Fillmore.

He opened with a 1-over-par 72, then finished with an 80 in the rain for a 152 that held off runner-up Niraj Lal of league champion Campbell Hall (78-76-154) by two strokes.

Third-place Alex Smith of Campbell Hall (73-82-155) claimed the final postseason berth in the two-day qualifier that left three Campbell Hall golfers, including Evan Heaps (75-81-156), among the top four finishers.

--Senior strength: Jarvey will be one of several top seniors competing at River Ridge. Brett Kanda of Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge, Ben Fox of Oakwood of North Hollywood, Danny Hoffenberg of Royal of Simi Valley, Nick Geyer of Viewpoint of Calabasas and Joe Greiner of Hart of Newhall also are trying to extend their final season of high school golf.

Prep League MVP Kanda and Fox are both 6 under par for the season, Fox getting that low in his only 2005 high school match. His school has no golf team but the two-time section finalist earned a berth at River Ridge by winning the section's individual-qualifier tournament for a third consecutive year by shooting 65 at Rio Hondo GC in Downey.

Geyer, a State Open qualifier last year, finished second to Kanda in Prep League this season, then shot 68 to win a State Amateur qualifying tournament Tuesday at Victorville's Spring Valley Lake Country Club. Hoffenberg set a school record with a 71.2 average this season, going into his final league match 1 over par for the season. Greiner has five 2005 rounds in the 60s, the most recent a 2-under-par 69 that shared medalist honors in Tuesday's first-stage Southern Section team qualifier at Sterling Hills GC in Camarillo.

Greiner plans to play for three-time state community college champion College of the Canyons next season. Jarvey (Loyola Marymount), Fox (Arizona), Kanda (UNLV), Hoffenberg (Fresno State) and Geyer (New Mexico) have accepted golf-scholarship offers from NCAA Division I programs.

--Northern Divisional: Highland's Jarvey shared third place behind co- medalists Greiner and Burroughs of Burbank junior Jeff Looby in Tuesday's team playoff opener at Sterling Hills GC, shooting 1-over-par 72 to lead all High Desert scorers.

Quartz Hill led the Golden League showing at the divisional, finishing 11th at 423 in an event that advanced winner Harvard-Westlake of Studio City (379) and second-place Hart (383) to Thursday's section team final.

Kevin Hayman and Michael Sanders both shot 83 to lead Quartz Hill, followed by Ancheta (85), Brian Barcelona and Travis Sinclair (86 each) and Terrance Hughes (90).
