GOLF: TOURNEY TO BENEFIT HOMELESS SHELTER.

VALENCIA - Clean off those spikes, polish the putters and pull out the tees to help raise funds for the less fortunate who live in the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672. .

The seventh annual Shelter Benefit Golf Tournament will tee off at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Vista Valencia Golf Course, 24700 W. Trevino Drive, to raise money for the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Homeless Shelter Homeless shelters are temporary residences for homeless people. Usually located in urban neighborhoods, they are similar to emergency shelters. The primary difference is that homeless shelters are usually open to anyone, without regard to the reason for need. .

``Last year, the Benefit Golf Tournament was the shelter's biggest fund- raiser, as we're out to repeat success,'' said Timothy Davis Timothy Davis may refer to:

, president of the Santa Clarita Community Development Corp., a nonprofit group that operates the shelter. ``Everyone gets to play on a fine course, see old friends and contacts, meet new ones, maybe win a prize. It's always a lot of fun and for a great cause.''

Proceeds from the event helps the winter shelter operate. Last year, there were so many in need, it ran out of money and was forced to rely on private donations during the last six weeks of operation.

This year, the shelter plans to open its doors Nov. 23 in a new temporary facility in a corner parking lot at the Via Princessa Metrolink Station in Canyon Country, and officials are expecting more homeless.

The tournament features a shotgun start A Shotgun Start is a golf tournament format in which all groups of players tee off simultaneously from different holes. Each hole on a course will be the tee off hole for each foursome. Group 1 would start from hole 1, Group 2 from hole 2, etc.  and best-ball scramble, with trophies awarded for first-, second- and third-place winners.

There also will be special prizes for winners of various skills tests and games, such as the longest ball and closest to the pin. Happy hour follows the tournament, along with lunch and dinner and a raffle.

Dana Coen, co-executive producer of the CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  series ``Jag,'' will be the tournament's guest speaker and contribute some of the show's promotional items Promotional items or promotional products refers to articles of merchandise that are used in marketing and communication programs. The items are usually imprinted or decorated with a company's name, logo or message, using techniques such as Embroidery, Silkscreen, or  and scripts to the raffle.

The cost for golf, lunch and dinner is $120 per person, which includes five raffle tickets, or $30 for dinner and two raffle tickets. On tournament day, it's $125 for lunch and dinner and $40 for dinner.
