GOLDEN LEAGUE PREVIEW : A LONG DISTANCE RUN AFFAIR.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Her telephone bill is rising, but Danielle Day's 3,200-meter time is dropping.

The Quartz Hill High junior speaks with Louisville High cross country coach Marie Murphy twice a week for training for advice.

``It's like having a personal trainer personal trainer person n(persönlicher) Fitnesstrainer m, (persönliche) Fitnesstrainerin f ,'' Day said.

, seems to be working.

As a sophomore, Day advanced to the state championships in the 3,200 meters and ran a school-record 10:45.20. In the state cross country meet last November, Day finished second in the Division I final.

Day and Murphy first met at the 1995 Foot Locker Foot Locker, Inc. Murphy began assisting Danielle at the request of Day's parents last track season, after the departure of Quartz Hill distance coach Kelly Marsh.

``It's an experiment; I've never coached somebody over the phone,'' said Murphy, who ran the marathon for Ireland in the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

``She has great potential and I am happy to help her any way I can. You really need to have a coach out there every day, but she has proven very capable and disciplined.''

Although Day and Murphy meet occasionally for Sunday workouts, Day times her own track intervals at Quartz Hill and logs most of her road mileage alone.

In the past, Day's training has consisted primarily of distance. Murphy has prescribed pre·scribe

``The workouts have made me faster and given me endurance,'' Day said. ``I think it's going to really make a difference.''

Quartz Hill head coach Sharon DeShane said she has no qualms about the arrangement as long as Day continues to attend daily practices at school.

The progress of Day and sophomore Carly Harrill, who finished fifth in the state Division I cross country final, in the distances as well as Quartz Hill's depth in the sprints and field events make the Rebels a favorite to knock off to cease, as from work; to desist.

``We have a lot more depth,'' Quartz Hill senior Michelle Perry Michelle Perry (born 1 May 1979 in Granada Hills, California) is an American athlete. At the 2004 Summer Olympics she placed 14th overall in the heptathlon competition. , where Quartz Hill captured the girls' team title for the second straight year.

Perry placed third in 300-meter low hurdles and fifth in the 100 hurdles at last year's state meet. Her time of 42.68 in the 300 hurdles moved her into second on the all-time region list and her time of 14.37 in the 100 hurdles ties for second.

Perry, the defending Southern Section Division I champion in both hurdle races, also has timed 11.96 for 100 meters, 24.70 in the 200 and spanned 18 feet, 6 inches in the long jump.

With refined technique and added preseason endurance work, Perry is hopeful of dipping under 14 seconds in the 100 hurdles and approaching the 40-second barrier in the 300 hurdles. She clocked 43.9 on a dirt track at Burbank.

``I haven't even done any real speed work yet,'' Perry said. ``My technique is a lot better. If I run 42.5 this season I'll be happy, but I really want to break 40.''

The Rebels also have been bolstered by the addition of Kenya Corley, a senior transfer from Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.
