The award presentation was included in a program for a fund-raising dinner Saturday at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills. Proceeds from the dinner will benefit Warner Center's Concerts in the Park as well as music and outreach programs in middle schools throughout the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Since some boys live in a fatherless environment, Big Brothers has designed the Sports Mentor program to help boys 6 through 13 who are growing up without fathers.

Since there are far more boys than Big Brothers, these youngsters are participating in the Sports Mentor program while they await the assignment of a Big Brother.

The program involves teaching and playing sports with the boys. Officials sought Sports Mentor volunteers in the Valley three months ago, but could not attract enough to start offering the service locally. Now, organizers are making another try to find sufficient volunteers to begin the program in the Valley.

In the past, efforts to get volunteers have been more successful in other areas.

For example, the Sports Mentor program has been well received at Cal State Long Beach and at the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission , according to according to
