GOLDEN BEAR SPORTSWEAR SHINES AT WHITE HOUSE NAFTA CEREMONY

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Golden Bear, the San Francisco sportswear company, was the only San Francisco company invited to attend the "NAFTA Jobs and Products Day" at a White House ceremony that took place this morning, Oct. 20. The ceremony was attended by over 100 members of Congress and presided over by President Clinton.
Schirley Zisman and her parents, Berek and Greta Winter, represented the family-owned Golden Bear firm, one of 150 companies at the ceremony. The companies showed the diverse range of products they export to Mexico. Exports to Mexico account for $40 billion dollars, support some 700,000 U.S. jobs and create a $5.6 billion trade surplus, according to the president.
Clinton, in his speech, especially singled out Golden Bear as one of his favorite companies and noted that he was one of Golden Bear's best customers. He spoke about the warm and moving letter sent to him by Zisman at the time of his election, a correspondence which blossomed into a special relationship and, as a result, a national fashion statement. Clinton is often seen wearing his Golden Bear leather "Bomber" jacket in newspapers and magazines all over the country. The White House Inaugural Committee ordered hundreds of jackets for all the performers at the inauguration in January of this year. Additionally, dozens of jackets have been ordered for the White House staff.
After today's ceremony, Clinton invited the family for a private meeting in the Oval Office.
Zisman said, "When President Clinton gave me a big hug after telling the world how much he loved our family and our company, it was the most thrilling moment of my life."
Golden Bear was founded in 1922 and started making the rugged and handsome, brown leather jackets for longshoremen working the San Francisco docks. Today, Golden Bear ships jackets all over the world where they sell in cities like Tokyo, Paris, London and Amsterdam. Golden Bear also supplies the jackets for top retailers including Brooks Brothers. The jackets and other sportswear in the Golden Bear line are all made in San Francisco at 200 Potrero Street.
Other California companies at the White House event included: Cal State Lumber Sales, Sun Microsystems, Directed Electronics, Advanced Cardiovascular Systems Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co.
