GOING THAT EXTRA YARD TOGETHER AGAIN FOR COMEDY SEQUEL, MATTHEW PERRY AND BRUCE WILLIS PROVE THEY'LL DO ANYTHING FOR A LAUGH.

Between flying grapes, Perry and Willis answered a few questions along the way. We covered comedy, nude scenes, the stench of dead chickens and dirty Valley secrets from a certain ``Friend's'' past.

Q: (to Perry) I went to high school with you.

Matthew Perry: You did? What year were you?

Q: Buckley High School (in Sherman Oaks), class of '86, so a year ahead. You were in ``The Sound of Music'' the year I graduated.

PERRY: I was in ``The Sound of Music.''

Bruce Willis: Kooky, man.

Q: I'll bet I'll Bet was an NBC game show that aired from March 29 1965 to September 24 1965, that was created by Ralph Andrews. The host of this program was Jack Narz. It was a precursor of It's Your Bet, which aired with four different hosts during its four year run: Hal March, Tom  the alumni association An alumni association is an association of graduates (alumni) or, more broadly, of former students. PERRY: They do. They do. They gave me my start. I did ``Our Town'' as well, which is pretty much the law in high school. You have to do that play.

WILLIS: What kind of a guy was Matthew in school? Did he have a rep?

Q: Witty, charming actor guy. We didn't think he'd amount to anything.

PERRY: I sure surprised everybody on that one.

WILLIS: As did I. I was the least likely to succeed.

Q: Let's back up to pre- ``Whole Nine Yards.'' You get into a room with Matthew Perry, sitcom star, for the first time. Mr. Willis, how intimidated were you?

WILLIS: Pretty intimidated. I am a fan of the friendship show, the ``Friends'' show, and couldn't, I think, assemble six funnier people who work together so well. And I like to laugh. I like the subtlety of that show, the comedy of that show (and) at the same time very broad stuff that they did on that show also. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

"Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party.
. We just kind of started having fun and cracking each other up and not making a big deal out of it.

Q: (to Perry) So you were able to put him at ease?

PERRY: I was a little intimidated as well when I met Bruce because he left a message on my machine that said, ``Call me back or I'm going to come over to your house and burn your house down and pull you out by your bloody stumps,'' if I remember correctly.

WILLIS: ``And watch as you drag your bloody stumps out of the house. Chop off your legs, set your house on fire ...''

PERRY: So I decided to return the call. The intimidation factor worked for the first movie, actually, but now that we know each other better, there's less of that.

Q: Speaking of the show, is there any truth to the rumor that on the final episode, Chandler will end up dumping Monica and marrying Joey?

PERRY: (laughs) No. There's no truth to that no matter how hard you guys try to spread that rumor.

Q: Why a sequel to ``The Whole Nine Yards''?

WILLIS: We talked about doing a sequel while we were shooting the first one. It wasn't until Matthew came up with the idea to hire George Gallo, the man who wrote ``Midnight Run,'' that it started to kind of gain some momentum. It was a great idea based on a hook for the second film that Matthew had about our characters kind of switching characteristics. The script was kind of expanded from there into this free-for-all.

We realized in a film like this, you could pretty much get away with any kind of ludicrous behavior once you're committed to it. It was just showing up every day and trying to make each other laugh.

Q: Did either of you ever say to the other, ``OK, now that's too much. You've gone too far there.''

PERRY: I think we said that a lot to each other, but we just completely ignored it and went as far as we wanted to go. The rule was that there were no rules. Whoever comes up with the funniest line, it's in the movie. From the craft services guy, to the director, to anybody.

your chain that people want to put a gun in your hand more often than they want to watch you mourn a dead chicken?

WILLIS: I was cast in a lot of comedies, but I think you get remembered for how much money your film makes rather than for the comic aspects of them. I would do more bizarre kinds of comic stuff. ``Death Becomes Her'' comes to mind, ``Breakfast of Champions.'' My career as a comedian really hasn't taken off yet. I really feel that after ``Moonlighting'' ... (He laughs and shakes his head).

Q: You almost had me going there.

WILLIS: If you say it with enough conviction ... you know what, it's the hardest thing in the world to make someone laugh. It's even harder to make people who are really adept at making other people laugh, laugh. If you can do that. ... And that's kind of what we did every day. We just kind of ran into work and tried to make each other laugh.

Q: (to Perry) Can Bruce Willis teach you anything about comedy?

PERRY: More in the first movie, any kind of minimal style of comedy was funny because we bounce off each other really well. Because I was just crazy and Bruce would get a laugh by kind of like raising his eyebrow a little bit as opposed to me, who would have to jump over a bed and fly into something. We just sort of learned from each other because we both take it really seriously.

WILLIS: It really is a peculiar thing. I always tell myself when you're doing the dumbest stuff like holding a dead chicken that's been preserved and, mercifully mer·ci·ful

PERRY: I smell Bruce's hands as often as I can. Seriously.

Q: Been awhile since you've done a nude scene.

WILLIS: Nice segue.

Q: Kind of a non-sequitur there, I guess.

WILLIS: A little Latin. Throwing a little Latin in there.

PERRY: Can you throw me a grape? Just one. (Willis throws it over his head.) That was a little high. You threw it high.

WILLIS: Been awhile since my last nude scene. Yeah, not since my big Hollywood hit ``Color of Night'' (laughs), which is still playing in the Penns Grove (N.J., Willis' hometown) Uniplex.

Q: Whose idea was the nude scene?

Rumer Willis: Mine.

PERRY: I think it was George Gallo's.

WILLIS: George Gallo's. There were some conversations about that scene. Was it too over-the-top? Ultimately, we tried it and said we'll see if it works or not. If they laugh, good. that's the yardstick we'll measure it by.

PERRY: And unfortunately, they laughed. So it's in the movie.

Q: Who laughed?

PERRY: Bruce.

Q: (to Perry) Did you demand equal time? Shouldn't you have also been nude?

PERRY: No, my feeling was my character would want to put some clothes on pretty much immediately. And it made for a nice contrast because his character was cool with it and stayed naked (to Willis). Which is the name of your next film, isn't it?

WILLIS: ``Stay Naked.'' Let's get down to the nitty nit 1
