GOING BY THE BOOK; RULES OF THE GAME INTRIGUING TO VISTA VALENCIA'S SCHMIDT.

Byline: Kristen Davis Daily News Staff Writer

Maxine Schmidt is 70 years old, but she knows the type of stress that comes with university entrance exams.

Schmidt isn't tested in English or math competency, however. Golf rules rack her brain.

Schmidt, a Northridge resident and member of Vista Valencia's women's golf club, is an expert on golf's rules. She is on the Western American Golf Association's (WAGA WAGA Western Amputee Golf Association
WAGA Western Action Group on AIDS
WAGA Western America Golf Association
WAGA Williamsburg Area Golf Association (Williamsburg, Virginia)
) rules committee and has attended several PGA/USGA workshops, four days of instruction and a 100-question final exam Noun 1. final exam - an examination administered at the end of an academic term

``The rules themselves are intriguing,'' she said. ``I learn something new every time I'm at a rules workshop or teaching a workshop. The rules are plays on words, too, and you have to figure out what the rules say. When you go (to a workshop), you don't get out to do anything. You're in session from 8 a.m. to 5:30. We went to dinner and then went to study.''

Schmidt also has been teaching workshops for WAGA since 1991. She has served on the rules committee for women's U.S. sectional qualifying rounds since 1994.

``We're out observing play and if golfers need help in relief situations like a proper drop from a water hazard, we're there to give it to them. . . . When you're applying them, you feel like you're helping a player improve their number of strokes,'' said Schmidt, who began golfing in 1981.
