Michael Arndt, 37, was listed in critical condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. Assigned to the department's arson unit at its downtown headquarters, Arndt also is a member of the city Fire Department's swift-water rescue team, said Capt. Glenn Ames, a colleague on the arson squad.

Arndt was hurt June 20 during races sponsored by the L.A. Ames said that Arndt, a San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

resident, joined the Los Angeles Fire Department nearly 18 years ago. Before being assigned to the arson unit, Arndt worked at Station 77 in Sun Valley.

``He's been into racing on and off for years,'' Ames said. On the racing circuit, drivers own their go-carts and accumulate points based on how they finish in each race. Go-carts are small, engine-powered vehicles built low to the ground.

Accounts vary on how fast Arndt was traveling when his go-cart crashed into the concrete wall ringing the speedway track, but estimates range from 40 mph to 50 mph. Ames said the captain was wearing a helmet.

``He had surgery and there are a lot of injuries. He's listed in critical condition,'' Ames said. ``He's still unconscious. Whether he's in a coma is undetermined, because the medication he's on would cause you or I to be unconscious, too.''

At the request of Arndt's colleagues, a Catholic priest came to Los Angeles Fire Station 18 in Granada Hills on Wednesday to say a Mass for him, Ames added.

``The doctor expects a very slow recovery to these type of injuries. It's just wait-and-see (until) he wakes up (to determine) what type of injuries he has and what type of trauma there is to the brain,'' Ames said.
