GO GREEN: New toilet cuts water wastage; sponsored by Environment Agency.

BOSSES at the Environment Agency are always trying to find new ways to save energy and water and reduce their waste.

Recycling is part of the routine at the Agency's office on Newcastle Business Park. Slightly more unusual are the new water-free urinals, which have reduced water consumption at the building.

The devices have a small plug at the bottom that remains closed when they are not in use.

The urinal recognises when it is in use, at which point the plug opens allowing all the liquid to drain away. Once finished, the plug closes again.

Employee Richard Laughton said: "The toilets always smell very fresh."
