The 15-member team of seventh- and eighth-graders competed against 25 other middle school teams in 23 events, placing first in six categories. Only two members had ever competed before. ``I think they did really well for it being a really young team,'' said coach Wes Thomas. ``We were very proud of their achievement. I think they worked really hard. ... They have a lot of achievement ahead of them.'' The win guarantees Joe Walker a place at the state competition, to be held March 29 at California State University Enrollment ``Since about 1995, we've been either first or second. ... We've been in the top two for eight years or so,'' Thomas said. In order to be chosen for the team, students had to attend practices at the school, then participate in a classroom competition. Thirty or 40 students try out each year. ``If they have skills that are very, very strong in two or four different events, then they are chosen,'' said Thomas. The members of the Joe Walker team were chosen in early December and have worked together since then to prepare for the competition. They have less than a month to refine their skills for the state competition against teams from San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850.
