GMPCS Adds Hughes BGAN Terminals to Its Inventory; World's Largest Provider of Hughes BGAN Equipment Now Offers the Recently Approved 'Class 1' Terminal for New Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN) Service.


POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- GMPCS Personal Communications, a subsidiary of Telenor Satellite Services, today announced that it has begun supplying the Hughes 9201 broadband satellite IP terminals to customers around the globe.

The Hughes 9201 terminal is 'Class 1' approved by Inmarsat meaning the terminal is capable of delivering the highest data rates available--up to 492 kbps. The Hughes 9201 terminal will work over the BGAN satellite network supporting as many as 11 users simultaneously and the ability to send and receive IP packet and circuit-switched data via USB USB

GMPCS placed an initial order for 1,000 Hughes 9201 terminals in May 2005. (See GMPCS Press Release dated May 10, 2005: GMPCS Places Order for New Mobile Broadband Terminals.) The term encompasses public and private companies in the wireline, wireless, Internet, cable, satellite, and managed services businesses.  to place an order for the terminals that are now ushering in the new global broadband service which became commercially available in December 2005.

The capabilities of BGAN include the delivery of Internet and intranet content and solutions, LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  and WAN connectivity, video on demand, videoconferencing, fax, e-mail, phone and local area network access at speeds of up to 492 kbps. Markets for these services encompass both the existing customers of Inmarsat, which include users from the military, forestry, media, mining, petroleum, and government segments, as well as new markets focusing on corporate users and enterprise solutions.
