GMD's CERT system controls emissions, significantly reduces exhaust volumes. (Technology in Action).

USER--Waupaca Foundry Plant #1, Waupaca, Wisconsin Waupaca is a city in Waupaca County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,676 at the 2000 census. The city is believed to be named after Sam Waupaca (or Chief Wapuka) of the Potowatomi tribe.  a producer of iron and ductile iron castings.

OPERATION--Cupola Emission Control System

PROBLEMS--Wet Scrubber discharge not meeting emission standards.

SOLUTION--Side stream at least 50% of the Cupola cupola /cu·po·la/ (koo´pah-lah) cupula.

cu·po·la
n.
A cup-shaped or domelike structure.

cupola

cupula.
Exhaust to a GMD (company) GMD - Full name: "GMD - Forschungszentrum Informationstechnik GmbH" (German National Research Center for Information Technology).

Before April 1995, GMD stood for "Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung" - National Research Center for Computer Science,
Cupola Emission Reduction and Treatment System (CERT) which includes GMD's High Temperature Off Gas Cooling and a GMD Flue Gas Cooler to cool the off gases, six (6) GMD Pulse Baghouses to filter the exhaust and GMD TETS TETS Third Echelon Test Set (USMC)

[TM] to treat the baghouse dust to a non-hazardous condition and the [SO.sub.2] in the exhaust stream.

BENEFITS--Taking 60% of the total cupola exhaust load, the GMD CERT produced a reported emission rate of less than 0.003 gr./dscf, far below the proposed MACT MACT Maximum Achievable Control Technology
MACT Maximum Available Control Technology

rate for Cupolas and is approximately 1/16 of the emission rate of the wet scrubber with the reduced exhaust volume.
