GM CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS STAFF APPOINTMENTS

 DETROIT, Feb. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Appointments to five positions on the General Motors Corporate Communications Staff were announced today by Bruce G. MacDonald, vice president in charge of the staff. The appointments are effective March 1.
 Ronald L. Theis, 55, was appointed to the new position of director of Corporate Philanthropy and Community Relations. He will report to Deborah I. Dingell, whose appointment as president of the General Motors Foundation was announced earlier. Theis will handle the day-to-day activities of the Foundation and will coordinate the corporation's community affairs activities.
 John F. Mueller, 56, was named to succeed Theis as director of International Communications. Mueller, who previously was director of news relations for GM's North American Operations (NAO), will report to MacDonald.
 Jack R. Harned, 60, was appointed director of news operations and will report to James W. Crellin, director of GM's news relations activity. Harned has been director of corporate communications for GM Hughes Electronics Corp. (GMHE), and was previously director of international programs in the International Communications activity.
 William B. Winters, 55, director of news relations in GM's New York office, was named to handle a special assignment for nine to 12 months with the American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAMA) in Washington, D.C. A successor to Winters in New York will be named at a later date.
 W. William Ott, 45, director of news relations in GM's Los Angeles office, will transfer to the GM news relations activity in Detroit. No immediate replacement was named for Ott in Los Angeles.
 Following is additional biographical information:
 Ronald L. Theis was born in Detroit on Aug. 31, 1937. Following graduation from Alfred University in 1960 with an economics-business degree, Theis joined GM as a Previews of Progress lecturer and became administrative assistant for Previews in 1963. He subsequently was named a staff assistant in the field relations section of the former GM Public Relations Staff. Following that assignment, he served in public relations capacities in several regional PR offices, including Newark, N.J.; Los Angeles; Atlanta; and Hackensack, N.J. He returned to Detroit as manager of field relations for the eastern United States in 1975, and became manager of regional offices in the central United States in 1981.
 John F. Mueller was born Feb. 20, 1937, in Yugoslavia to parents of German descent. He emigrated to the United States and has lived in the Detroit area since 1951. Mueller earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1959 and subsequently worked as a reporter for the Detroit Free Press. He entered public relations in 1965 with Campbell-Ewald Advertising and, following that, with Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. He joined GM in 1973 as assistant regional manager for southeastern Michigan and Canada and then became manager of that office. He was named assistant director of public relations for Chevrolet in 1976 and was appointed director of public relations for the GM's Saginaw Division in 1978. He returned to Detroit in 1981 as manager of special projects in the International public relations activity. He was appointed a staff assistant in the GM news relations activity in 1982 and later served in several other news relations positions before being named director of NAO news relations in 1992.
 Jack R. Harned was born Aug. 31, 1932, in Madison, Wis., and received a bachelor of science degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin in 1954. He worked as a reporter for the Wisconsin State Journal in Madison during college and following graduation before joining the staff of U.S. Sen. William Proxmire in Washington, D.C., in 1958. Harned joined GM in 1960 in a news relations capacity and became director of public relations for the former AC Electronics unit of GM in 1965. He became a staff assistant in the Washington office of GM Public Relations in 1968 and transferred to the news relations activity in Detroit in 1972. He was promoted to manager of European public relations in London in 1978 and moved to the same position to Brussels, Belgium, in 1981. He was named director of international programs in International Communications in 1983 and director of corporate communications at GMHE in 1992
 William B. Winters was born Oct. 9, 1937, in Toledo, Ohio. He received a bachelor's degree in industrial marketing from the University of Toledo in 1959 and a master's degree in industrial relations from the University of Detroit in 1971. He joined GM in 1961 as a Previews of Progress lecturer and subsequently worked briefly in the Kansas City regional PR office and with the GM Futurama staff. He was assigned to the GM's educational relations activity in 1964 and moved to Fisher Body Division public relations in 1967. He transferred to the news relations activity in New York in 1972 and later served in several other news relations positions before being named manager of news relations in New York in 1986 and director of that office in 1987.
 W. William Ott was born Aug. 17, 1947, in Bowling Green, Ohio, and earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Miami University of Ohio in 1969. He was a reporter for the Fostoria (Ohio) Review-Times in 1967 and a reporter/photographer for the Bowling Green Sentinel-Tribune in 1970-71. Following a brief stint as director of public information at Miami University, he joined GM in 1972 as a public relations representative with Pontiac Motor Division and became public relations supervisor there in 1974. He was named assistant regional PR manager in Los Angeles in 1978 and became western regional manager for Chevrolet in Los Angeles in 1980. He was named an assistant public relations director for Chevrolet in 1983. Following a brief absence from GM, he was named director of news relations in the Los Angeles office in 1988.
