GM ANNOUNCES TWO SAFETY RECALLS

DETROIT, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors (NYSE: GM) announced today that it is conducting two voluntary recalls to correct safety-related conditions on certain full-size trucks and police cars and special service station wagons.
In the first recall, certain 1988-93 Chevrolet and GMC Truck full- size pickup trucks and 1992 Suburban, Blazer and Yukon models equipped with 5.0L, 5.7L and 7.4L engines coupled with 4L60, 4L60-E, and 3L80 automatic transmissions are involved.
Vehicles included in this recall could exhibit a condition where transmission fluid is vented and may come in contact with the catalytic converter, especially when used for trailering heavy loads at high speeds or in high load off-road duty cycles. If this occurs, the vented fluid may ignite. Dealers will install a longer vent hose to re-route possible vented transmission fluid away from any heat sources.
GM learned about the situation from field incident reports which included some minor injuries. There have been no reported fatalities connected with this condition. Approximately 1.8 million vehicles, or 50 percent of production, are involved.
The second recall involves approximately 20,000 1991-92 Chevrolet Caprice police cars and special service wagons operated in areas where salt is used to clear snow-covered or icy roads.
These vehicles could exhibit an electrical ground out condition as a result of corrosion between the 12-volt junction block and metal inner fender skirt. If this condition exists it could cause a melted junction block, smoke, and burned underhood wiring and result in a disabled vehicle or vehicle fire. No injuries have been reported as a result of this condition.
Dealers will inspect junction blocks for corrosion and install a shielding insulator under the junction block or replace the junction block in severe corrosion cases. In both cases, dealers have been notified and owner/operator letters are being sent.
