GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE THIRD WORLD INFORMS `BABEL' FILMMAKER'S VIEW OF U.S.

Byline: -- Bob Strauss

With ``Babel Babel (bā`bəl) [Heb.,=confused], in the Bible, place where Noah's descendants (who spoke one language) tried to build a tower reaching up to heaven to make a name for themselves. ,'' Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu set himself a degree of difficulty exponentially higher than those of his previous, multistory mul·ti·sto·ry   also mul·ti·sto·ried

And that's high.

``I think this is the craziest and most irresponsible idea that I've had in my life,'' the director admits. ``But, for me, this film was a moral kind of project. As a Third World citizen who now lives in a First World country (the U.S.), I've gotten a lot of new perspectives and ideas. I had to purge all of these things "These Things" is an EP by She Wants Revenge, released in 2005 by Perfect Kiss, a subsidiary of Geffen Records. Music Video

out there, and it was challenging on every level: emotionally, intellectually, logistically. It was a beautiful experience.''

Filmed over the span of a year in Morocco, Mexico and Japan, ``Babel'' follows four groups of people whose lives are all affected by a single rifle. Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett Catherine Élise Blanchett (born May 14, 1969), better known as Cate Blanchett, is an Academy Award- and Golden Globe Award-winning Australian actress. She has also won various awards, most notably including two SAGs and two BAFTAs, making her one of a few actors who won all  and Gael Garcia Bernal head an international cast of professionals and first-time actors.

``The big difference with `Babel' is that it has more stories, with five different languages and a global scale,'' Gonzalez Inarritu explains. ``There is a lot of political and social comment involved. But beyond that grand scale, they are very intimate stories being told.''

Also making it look big is Pitt, one of the most recognized celebrities in the world. Fitting such a superstar into a serious art film took some effort.

``It was a very, very good experience,'' Gonzalez Inarritu emphasizes. ``I think it was a very challenging character for him. He really worked hard, dug deep to understand. It was a very intense experience for both of us. And we were not in comfortable surroundings. This production was not `Ocean's 13.' ''
