GLOBAL GROCERY MARKETPLACE CONSOLIDATES; NEW NIELSEN STUDY REVEALS
DOMINANCE OF GLOBAL MANUFACTURERS AND PRIVATE LABEL
NORTHBROOK, Ill., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- A new report recently released by Nielsen Marketing Research, titled, "The Nielsen Global Strategic Market Planner," reviews nine key beverage and grocery categories across eight global markets. The report provides grocery marketers with a strategic look at key players, competitive structures and the size and growth of the leading markets worldwide.
The report features information on cereal, chocolate, salted biscuits (crackers), sweet biscuits (cookies), cat food, dog food, bottled water, carbonated beverages and whiskey. Each category is defined and measured consistently across all markets. The eight global markets covered are Germany, Spain, France, Great Britain, Italy, U.S., Canada, and Japan. Together, these countries represent 60 percent of the global GDP.
"In this concentrated marketplace, it's essential for manufacturers to understand what their competitors are doing -- not only in categories in which they compete directly but in related categories as well," explains Lucia Oddo, vice president, Global Information Services, Nielsen Marketing Research. "We believe the Global Information Strategic Market Planner is an important tool to provide clients this broad worldwide perspective. We're currently working on similar reports for the housekeeping and health and beauty aids industries," she concluded.
The report revealed that while many of these markets show strong growth, the competitive structure is consolidating -- with global manufacturers and private label dominating the largest share. For example, the top three global manufacturers of pet food together control 73.5 percent of the category across eight global markets. In addition, private label for pet food, growing in volume over 8 percent annually, currently holds 10 percent of the global market.
