Residents have acknowledged firefighters this week by offering everything from free coffee to indoor bathroom use. They thanked fire officials for holding back a fire that many feared could have left countless houses burned to the ground.

The 524-acre fire that started late Tuesday forced dozens of residents to evacuate and threatened hillside homes in Glendale and La Canada. But firefighters are credited with responding quickly and keeping homes and people safe.

``I've had so many people offer cookies and coffee, I started to feel guilty because I couldn't take all of it,'' said Captain Michael Karlis of the Glendale Fire Department.

At Fire Station 21, firefighters returned from the front lines to find care packages of cookies, a ham and cards. In fact, most of Glendale's fire stations received packages.

Assemblyman Jack Scott, D-Pasadena, has already planned a recognition event for next Wednesday at the Descanso Gardens Descanso Gardens is a 160-acre botanical garden and historical site located at 1418 Descanso Drive, La CaƱada Flintridge, California, USA. Plans are also in the works for a ceremony at the Vallejo Drive Seventh Day Adventist Church. Details are still being worked out.

Church member Alma Wesley said she wants to acknowledge the firefighters for their bravery. Some church member's homes were threatened by the fire.

``We were concerned for them. It's just a way to say `thank you,' '' Wesley said. ``I was always taught to say thank you.''
