For local sports enthusiasts, the Glendale City Council's decision Tuesday to build the $7.7 million Freeway Sports Complex was reason to cheer.

After 15 years of planning, the city is finally on the road to creating the 25-acre complex, replete re·plete

Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  fields and two soccer fields.

But the decision was a major blow to Charles Whitesell and his neighbors on Fern Lane. While sports boosters have lobbied hard for the project, the Fern Lane residents have waged an unpopular battle against the complex, fearing the loss of the tranquillity of their quiet neighborhood.

``It's kind of like fighting motherhood,'' Whitesell said.

The Fern Lane residents expect their quiet sloping street, located in the shadow of the Glendale Freeway The Glendale Freeway is a minor freeway in the Los Angeles, California, USA, metropolitan area. It runs from Glendale Boulevard in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles to Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada Flintridge. Throughout its length, it is signed as California State Route 2. , will be transformed by the complex. They envision the roadway clogged with parents dropping off their children for softball and baseball practice and huge crowds at sports tournaments.

The battle isn't over, Whitesell said, expecting that the Fern Lane Area Resident Association will ask a judge to throw out the council's decision on environmental grounds.

Nello Iacono, the city's director of Park, Recreation and Community Services, called the council's decision a ``milestone.''

``We have a real severe deficiency of athletic fields in this city,'' Iacono said, saying the complex will be designed to serve residents from throughout Glendale.

Iacono said the site is one of the only places in the city available to develop much-needed baseball, softball and soccer fields. The city of 190,000 has 18 baseball and softball fields, but not one site specifically dedicated to soccer.
