GLENDALE - Hoping to raise reading and math scores among middle school students, Glendale schools will start requiring incoming high school freshman to meet higher standards to advance to ninth grade, officials said Thursday.

Adopted by the Board of Education this week, the policy will begin next fall with new seventh-graders. Those students will be required to earn 90 credits - with a maximum of five per class - by the end of middle school, with some credits to come from language arts language arts

and math courses. If students fail any of their language arts or math classes, they will not be promoted to the next grade.

``There are significant numbers of students failing English and math in our middle schools,'' said Joann Merrick, assistant superintendent Assistant Superintendent, or Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was a rank used by police forces in the British Empire. It was usually the lowest rank that could be held by a European officer, most of whom joined the police at this rank.  of educational services, who added that she did not have specific figures. ``Hopefully, students will take their classes seriously and see that they cannot get F's and continue on.''

The new policy follows passage of state legislation two years ago that bans schools from practicing social promotion, the act of promoting students to the next grade despite failing marks. In the past, middle school students in Glendale had to earn fewer than four F's to move onto high school.

Under the new policy, students eventually will be required to earn 100 credits, including 20 units each from language arts and math by the time they graduate from middle school, which spans seventh and eighth grades. During that time, students can earn a total of 120 credits or five credits per class each semester se·mes·ter

The Bridge Program, which begins this summer, will require students to attend summer school and double up their language arts and math instruction the following fall. The aim is to get students working at grade level, said Mary McKee, director of instructional support services support services Psychology Non-health care-related ancillary services–eg, transportation, financial aid, support groups, homemaker services, respite services, and other services .

Educators say they want to do everything they can to keep students from slipping through the cracks.

The new system will be easier for students to understand and likely will improve student achievement, said Anne Gibson, principal at Roosevelt Middle School.

``Our students will rise to the occasion,'' Gibson said. ``I think they do want to leave us. Even though they've had a wonderful time in middle school, I don't think they want to spend the rest of their lives with us.''
