GLENDALE FLOAT HOUND TO SHED PARTY-DOG LABEL.

Byline: Lee Condon Daily News Staff Writer

A basset hound basset hound, breed of short-legged, long-bodied hound developed centuries ago in France. It stands from 12 to 15 in. (30.1–38.1 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 25 to 50 lb (11.3–22.7 kg).  in a party hat received the Glendale City Council's blessing to be the star of the city's float in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses parade The Tournament of Roses Parade was established, and first held, on January 1,1890, in Pasadena, California, eight miles (13 km) northeast of Downtown Los Angeles.

Rooted in tradition, this parade is broadcast on multiple television networks, watched by upwards of one

The council voted to accept the dog design for the float, but sent it back to the Glendale Rose Float Association for rechristening. While the council did not specifically outlaw keeping the ``party animal'' name, members of both the council and the association said a new moniker (1) A name, title or alias. See alias.

 would be chosen.

The hound's fate was left in the hands of the council because of an internal battle in the local float association. The group picked the ``party animal'' theme by a vote of 13-3, but minority members launched an anti-basset hound hound, classification used by breeders and kennel clubs to designate dogs bred to hunt animals. Most of the dogs in this group hunt by scent, their quarry ranging from such large game as bear or elk to small game and vermin; ground scenters trail slowly with the head  campaign, saying a dog in a party hat is the wrong image for Glendale residents.

They wanted a float to fit the parade's theme, ``Visions of the Future,'' and said a party dog would give the impression that Glendale residents are a bunch of drunks.

By approving the float plan Tuesday, the council met a May 1 deadline for submitting a design to the Tournament of Roses. The Glendale Rose Float Association will meet May 10 to pick a new name.

Marilyne Wiechmann, president of the Glendale Rose Float Association, said she is happy with the compromise. Wiechmann led the effort to deep-six the basset hound against the wishes of her own board of directors. She felt strongly that the ``party animal'' theme was inappropriate for Glendale.

``There are a lot of people in the community who felt the same way,'' said Wiechmann, relieved that the council weighed in.

``I'm happy it's over. It's been a nightmare,'' said Wiechmann, who announced that the float association will be throwing a Victorian tea as part of its fund-raising efforts Noun 1. fund-raising effort - a campaign to raise money for some cause

``Having never had the opportunity to be one, I guess I envy those who are,'' Bremberg quipped.

Garry Ackerman, vice president of the float association, defended the dog.

 the wrong image for Glendale.

``To those people, I say get a life,'' Ackerman said. ``This pooch is fun.''

Typically, float plans are simply presented for review, and the council doesn't second-guess the design. Although the city is providing $60,000 toward the $90,000 cost, the float is a project of the association rather than the city.

Councilman Sheldon Baker had suggested adding a cat to the float and perhaps children of different ethnicities to create a theme of peace and harmony in a new millennium.``What if we say to the association, you decide? If you're in love with it, God bless bless

``You have to look at the good that has come out of this,'' Weaver said. ``The Tournament of Roses tells me they never get this kind of publicity in April.''
