GLADIATOR STAR DIES ON FILM SET; Actor David, 62, has heart attack.
ACTOR David Hemmings has died of a heart attack on a film set in Romania.
The 62-year-old, who first found acting fame in the 1960s, had returned to the big screen in 2000 as Cassius in Gladiator after going into directing for some time.
He had recently starred in Gangs Of New York, The LeagueOf Extraordinary Gentleman and Mean Machine.
Hemmings was working on a film called Samantha's Child when he collapsed on his way to his dressing room.
The father-of-five's third wife, Lucy Williams, was at his side.
His agent Liz Nelson said:``Sadly, while filming in Romania, David collapsed suddenly and died of a heart attack.
``He had just finished his final shots of the day and was going back to his dressing room'' Hemmings started in show business as an outstanding boy soprano. Composer BenjaminBritten wrote some of his most important child parts for him.
His films in the 60s included Blow-Up, Barbarellaand Camelot.
But by 1972 he was turning his attention to directing, including work on shows such as Magnum PI, Airwolf, The A-Team andQuantum Leap. He once said: ``People thought I was dead. But I wasn't, I was just directing The A-Team.''
The actor's eldest son Nolan, from his first marriage to actress Gayle Hunnicutt, starred in the TV series Band Of Brothers.
