Many other countries have official days to celebrate their children, but America doesn't, said Jim Ventress, the club's chief professional officer. The Boys & Girls Clubs of America organization, along with the support of other leading youth-serving organizations, is working to change that by establishing the third Saturday in September each year as Boys & Girls Clubs Day for Kids. Created as a day to foster relationships between adults and children, the mission is to establish a day to celebrate and honor American children through the gift of meaningful time. Research shows that when adults spend such time with kids, it helps them develop a positive self-image and a sense of belonging, usefulness and purpose. ``The event is a collaborative effort with the city of Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987.
