GIVING HOPE TO HIGHER EDUCATION CLUB'S SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON HELPS STUDENTS.Byline: RICK COCA Valley News Writer Karen Sikora, the Sylmar Woman's Club president, can't tell you exactly when her club started providing scholarships for Sylmar High School Sylmar High School is a public school in the northeast San Fernando Valley in the Sylmar district of Los Angeles, California. Established in the 1950s, it is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, District 2, and serves more than 3,600 students in grades 9-12. and Mission College students, but she can tell you things have dramatically improved. ``It started out with eight women giving out $400 and now we're giving out $11,000,'' Sikora said recently at the Sylmar Woman's Club Scholarship Luncheon, held at the Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills. This year the club gave out $500 scholarships along with three $1,000 memorial scholarships to 11 Sylmar High School and eight Mission College students. Students were introduced along with some of their family members at the luncheon provided by the club. The students will actually receive the money through the financial-aid departments of their respective schools once they register for classes in the fall. ``It gives them a start,'' Sikora said. ``It gives them hope. That they can say, `Yes, I can get an education.'''
