Scores of organizations across the region have set up donation programs for the victims of the terrorist attacks.

Before donating, people should make sure the donation is going to the ``appropriate relief agencies,'' said Tamryn Catania of the Los Angeles Police Commission Office. ``Before you donate, please take an opportunity to confirm the status of the charity.''

Here are some of the programs that are collecting for victims:

The California Association of Highway Patrolmen and the California Highway Patrolmen's Association have set up the California New York Law Enforcement Trust at the Golden One Credit Union, Attention: Chief Financial Officer, 6507 Fourth Ave., Sacramento 95817.

United Way of Greater Los Angeles has established an Emergency Response Fund to help victims and their families in Los Angeles County and nationwide. The fund will help provide emergency food, blood, clothing, counseling and supplies to the victims.

The Santa Clarita/Antelope Valley Chapter of Project Linus is joining chapters nationwide in asking for new handmade security blankets to be sent to traumatized children in New York City and Washington, D.C.

The collection site will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. During evenings and on weekends, donations may be made at Sears.

Los Angeles County Firefighters Union, Local 1014, is collecting money for victims of the terrorist attacks. Send checks made payable to the FDNY Disaster Fund to F&A Federal Credit Union, Attn: Lee Jackson, 2625 Corporate Place, Monterey Park 91754-7645.

Firefighters Quest for Burn Survivors, a Glendale-based nonprofit, is collecting donations. Checks can be sent to 1146 N. Central Ave., No. 398, Glendale 91202-2506.

A fund has been set up to help the wife of Tom Pecorelli, a 30-year-old Fox Sports Net cameraman from Topanga, who was among the 92 passengers aboard the doomed American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles.

Pecorelli's wife of nearly two years, Kia Pavloff, is expecting their first child in April.

Blockbuster Entertainment stores are starting a fund-raising campaign in stores called the Sept. 11 Fund. Blockbuster has committed $1 million to the victims. Anyone who would like to donate can drop off checks at local Blockbuster stores.

Los Angeles County residents who need to speak to a counselor regarding the terrorist attacks can call the county Department of Mental Health crisis counseling line at [phone].

The Southern California division of the American Red Cross is extending hours at its blood donor centers in response to the increased need on the East Coast because of the terrorist attacks.

Type O-negative blood, the ``universal'' blood type that anyone can receive, is in the highest demand.

To give blood, you must be 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and not at risk for HIV/AIDS.
