 iron foundry A semiconductor manufacturer that makes chips for third parties. It may be a large chip maker that sells its excess manufacturing capacity or one that makes chips exclusively for other companies.  Cifunsa and the aluminum foundry Castech, has reached an agreement to sell 51% of the capital of its Ditemsa subsidiary, which manufactures foundry equipment and tooling, to the British company NPL 1. NPL - New Programming Language. IBM's original (temporary) name for PL/I, changed due to conflict with England's "National Physical Laboratory." MPL and MPPL were considered before settling on PL/I. The agreement calls for the sale of only the iron and aluminum foundry equipment activities of Ditemsa, and not its activities in plastic injection, which was restructured as an independent company.

Cifunsa is the largest independent foundry for gray iron engine blocks and heads in the world. Castech is jointly owned by both Gissa and VAW Automotive Products, Bonn, Germany.
