GIRLS CAPTURE CROWN : WESTLAKE-AGOURA WINS SOFTBALL TITLE.

Byline: Vincent Bonsignore Daily News Staff Writer

It's interesting how matchups work out sometimes.

All year long the Westlake-Agoura girls' softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  12-under All-Star team had problems with Hart softball, from Valencia.

Westlake-Agoura finished in second place to Hart this year in the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Regional, a qualifying tournament that precedes the Amateur Softball Association National Championship Tournament.

made sure of that by beating Hart twice - the first time knocking the Valencia team into the losers' bracket and the second time eliminating Hart from the tournament.

Westlake-Agoura, meanwhile, beat Hacienda Heights twice on its way to the championship, wrapping up the title with a 6-3 win.

``I guess it was just one of those things,'' Westlake-Agoura coach Rance Dahl dahl

said. ``Things just worked out for us.''

By avoiding the losers' bracket, Westlake-Agoura needed just five games to win the championship.

``To be honest, we were hoping to play Hart,'' said Dahl, whose team split six games against its rival this year. ``But they just couldn't hit the Hacienda hacienda

Dahl credits focus for the team's success.

``It was one of those things where every day we'd wake up and walk to the fields and say, we're going to win; we're going to win,'' Dahl said. ``You could see it in the girls' eyes. They were not going to be denied.''

He also credits their teamwork.

``The first time we talked to them as a team we told them we needed all 12 players,'' Dahl said. ``And we got contributions from everybody. There isn't any one star on this team. Everybody had a hand in what we did.''
