her, she may appear to be just a quiet, unassuming sophomore. But, as opponents are quickly finding out, Kristen Galbreath, one of the youngest members of the powerful Royal High girls' basketball attack, can be just as deadly as the rest.

came Saturday against Alemany in the final of the Bell-Jeff tournament. With just two seconds remaining in the game, Galbreath received a pass from Alicia Weber and scored the game-winning basket. The situation was not unfamiliar for Galbreath and the Highlanders. Just a few weeks earlier, in the final of the Gold Coast Classic against Santa Ynez, Weber fed a pass to Galbreath who scored with one second left to give the Highlanders the championship.

``She's a big-time player,'' coach Mike Kohl kohl

said of Galbreath. ``We've been in two championship games and both times she's come through. She's scored the last basket in both of them.''

Galbreath is not the only Highlander who has been excelling lately. Kohl had nothing but praise for the 13-1 Highlanders, who moved up to the No. 2 spot in the Daily News rankings.

``Everybody's learned their roles on the team,'' Kohl said. ``They've got good chemistry. They're going to be pretty tough to beat.''

Prime time: An array of tournaments provided excitement for the early portion of the season, but this week marks the beginning of the games that really count for most teams. One team that might find a little extra meaning in league games is Moorpark. The defending league-champion Musketeers are playing their last season in the Frontier league The Frontier League, based in Troy, Illinois, is a professional, independent baseball organization located in the Midwestern United States and Western Pennsylvania. It operates mostly in cities not served by Major or Minor League Baseball teams and is not affiliated with either.  and would like nothing better than to go out on a winning note.

So far, finding a way to win has not been a problem for the Musketeers (11-3), who are loaded with experienced players. All-Southern Section junior guard Damaris Hinojosa is having another stellar season and is joined by five returning seniors.

``We're a competitive team,'' coach Brent Milburn said. ``Our team is right where we want to be. Our nonleague schedule was one of the toughest in school history. We played some real strong teams and we held our own. We're real happy.''

In what they hope is a preview of things to come next year in their new league, the Musketeers defeated Marmonte League member Newbury Park on Saturday.

Mighty Marmonte: Royal might be the favorite in the Marmonte League, but the race for the next few spots in the standings should be tight. ``They're all big games in the Marmonte,'' Kohl said. ``There's no one you can overlook.''

Simi Valley has been the surprise team of the early season and only looks to be getting better. ``They are much improved,'' Kohl said of the Pioneers' recent play. He predicted that if the Pioneers continue at their current pace they should beat Channel Islands and Thousand Oaks.
