GIRLS' WATER POLO: SEEDINGS NOT SO CERTAIN.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Agoura, Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest.  and Harvard-Westlake of Studio City are used to being among the elite as they enter the Southern Section girls' water polo water polo, swimming game encompassing features of soccer, football, basketball, and hockey. The object of the game is to maneuver, by head, feet, or hand, a leather-covered ball 27 to 28 in.  playoffs. The same is true this year as each earned top-four seeds in their respective divisions when playoff pairings were released Monday.

However many local teams, even those highly seeded, are in unfamiliar situations entering the playoffs, which begin with first-round games today and Thursday.

In Division II, Camarillo and Calabasas are riding the momentum of their first league titles. Camarillo won just five games last season, but turned around to win the Pacific View League title and the Scorpions' first playoff berth this season. Calabasas, which had to play in the wild-card round last year, tied for the Frontier League The Frontier League, based in Troy, Illinois, is a professional, independent baseball organization located in the Midwestern United States and Western Pennsylvania. Even though Agoura is seeded, the Marmonte League champions are also facing change. The Chargers, who have played in the past two Division II finals and became the first local team win a title by winning last season's championship, had to settle for the No. 4 seed this year. Agoura had moved up to No. in the division rankings in January, but the drop means the Chargers will likely have to overcome No. 1 Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  in the semifinals to reach this year's final.

Agoura and defending Division III finalist Harvard-Westlake both have vastly different lineups than in previous postseasons as both teams were hit hard by graduation. Crescenta Valley has a lineup full of Division III playoff veterans, but the No. 2 Falcons are adjusting to the loss of a key player. Senior Laura Classens suffered a broken nose during last week's Pacific League finals and could be out for the rest of the season.

Because of an expanded bracket this year, Division III begins today instead of Thursday with the other division. Crescenta Valley, Harvard- Westlake and Flintridge Prep all earned first-round byes
