GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL COULD IT BE A NEW VIEW FOR VIEWPOINT? PATRIOTS POISED TO TAKE OVER LEAGUE TOP SPOT.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Viewpoint High proved last season it could compete with two-time defending Liberty League girls' volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. This year, Viewpoint could take over the top spot.

``We are the team to beat,'' Viewpoint coach Frank Pontello said.

With a share of the league title on the line the last two seasons, Viewpoint lost five-game matches to Providence. But Viewpoint appears to have the edge on Providence, which graduated five starters from last year's team.

Viewpoint, which won Heritage League titles in 1995 and 1996 and the Liberty League title in 1997, could start the first of another title streak. The Patriots have an experienced nucleus nucleus, in physics

The four were members of the 1999 team, the school's first to reach the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division V-AA volleyball playoffs.

The Patriots will have a formidable front line with Kellard (5-10) at middle blocker and outside hitters Brown (5-7), Sherman (5-9) and Rahbar (5-7). Brown, an all-league second-team selection, along with Kellard and Rahbar, have improved their hitting skills during club volleyball.

Rahbar, who will also set, is the team's best all-around passer, and Brown is the quickest. Kellard is a defensive force at middle blocker as well as a strong hitter.

``We're looking to run a lot of quick attacks,'' Pontello said. ``Sarah has a real big upside Upside

Sherman could make the most impact. After earning all-league first-team honors as a freshman last season, she had surgery on her right (hitting) shoulder in the spring.
